Life changes? IRS To-dos

By Deborah Lagutaris, J.D.  August 11, 2012

Maintaining Good Relations with the IRS:  In the Loop

When you move or change your name, save yourself trouble down the road by notifying the IRS and the Social Security Administration (SSA).

If you got married, divorced, or had a child during the year, it is wise to formally notify the SSA and the IRS  before your tax return is due. Similarly, your child will need a Social Security Number (SSN) if you wish to claim her as a dependent.

If you move, notify the IRS.  Merely changing your address on your form 1040 or 1120 or 990 does not constitute notification.  A change-of-address form link follows.

Important notice regarding tax filing status during the year of divorce!

Divorced persons. If you are divorced under a final decree by the last day of the year, you are considered unmarried for the whole year and you cannot choose married filing jointly as your filing status.

Now, details follow:

Name change. If you changed your name because of marriage, divorce, etc., be sure to report the change to your local Social Security Administration (SSA) office before filing your return. This prevents delays in processing your return and issuing refunds. It also safeguards your future social security benefits.

Child SSN: Visit the SS website to obtain the form required to issue your child his own SSN.

New address: This is a direct link to the IRS form 8822, Change of Address.
